That Which We Hate - Clare Golding

Parent Chapter

Moving into her new apartment had been easy for Clare. She'd just graduated from law school and all of her money for the last seven years had gone to tuition and survival; she had little in the way of possessions.

For clothes she had a couple 'going out' outfits, a bunch of casual clothes that she'd been wearing since high school, and a week's worth of work clothes that she'd just bought for her new job at Whitman Law Offices . Her first paycheck was earmarked for a new wardrobe, the next was going to food and rent, the one after that was going toward her massive school loans.

For furniture she had a small double bed, two folding chairs, a bean bag chair, and a small study desk. For everything else she used milk cartons, lots and lots of milk cartons. They stored her clothes, held her books, acted as step stools, and anything else her creative mind could come up with.

Clare had planned on moving back home after graduating. She'd had a job lined up at a small law firm in her home town. She'd planned on living at home until she'd paid off some of her student loans, but then she'd received an invitation for a Steerling Street apartment at a price that was so low she'd thought that someone had made a mistake and left out a couple digits. Despite now being able to afford an upscale, downtown, two bedroom apartment, she probably would have dismissed the invite and moved home, except for the job offer.

Out of the blue Whitman Law Offices called her and offered her a job that paid triple what the job back home was paying. Besides that, Angela Whitman was going to mentor Clare herself, training her to be the next hotshot litigator. It was a dream job. It was too good to pass up.

After unpacking and putting her few possessions away, she ate a small dinner and then readied for bed. Tomorrow she started her new job and she wanted to get lots of sleep.

Unfortunately, just as she was about to crawl in bed, she noticed something unusual, something that didn't belong to her, and she couldn't figure out how it had entered her apartment. The place had been bare when she'd entered and she'd personally packed and unpacked all of her things. Yet, across the room, sitting in plain sight on top of a milk carton was...
